Nazareth Hospital Cancer Survivors Celebrate Life With a Song in Their Hearts
NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (June 8, 2012): On Sunday, June 3, Nazareth Hospital oncology staff members held a luncheon in honor of the Hospital’s cancer survivors. Nearly 100 former patients and their guests attended the event, themed “Celebrating Life With a Song in My Heart.”
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual worldwide celebration of life; participants unite in this event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality. Nazareth was one of many care providers across the country and around the world hosting a celebration in the past week
Nazareth Hospital’s Cancer Survivors Day committee, chaired by Cancer Nurse Navigator Terrie Cannon, BSN, RN, OCN; and Chief Radiation Technologist Candy McLaughlin, has hosted the event for over 16 years. Featured speakers included David Baldwin and Sister Phyllis DiRenzo, CSFN.
"I will not let cancer take me hostage. I will not be a victim. As I celebrate with my fellow survivors today, I remember that we are living, we’re thriving and surviving,” said David in his remarks. David is currently undergoing treatment at Nazareth for colon cancer.
“Thanks to cancer, I don’t have bad days, just challenging days. Having cancer taught me to never take anything for granted. Cancer can’t touch my heart and diminish me,” said Sister Phyllis, a breast cancer survivor.
Nazareth Hospital, a member of the Jefferson Kimmel Cancer Network, offers patients with cancer leading-edge diagnostics such as digital mammography, medical oncology, advanced radiation oncology technology including image-guided radiation therapy, surgical oncology, and infusion services.
