Mercy Philadelphia Hospital to offer Free Manicures with Mammograms on Saturday, March 22
West Philadelphia, PA (March 14, 2014): Women who walk in for a screening mammogram on Saturday, March 22, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital can walk out with a fresh manicure.
“We want to give hard-working and busy women a convenient opportunity to do two important things for themselves: get their annual mammogram and get pampered”, says Sister Suzanne Gallagher, vice president of mission integration at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital. “We encourage women to bring their moms, sisters, daughters and friends to be screened and reward themselves for taking the step towards breast health.”
No appointments are needed for the mammograms on Saturday, March 22. Patients can simply stop by the Radiology Department at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital, with a signed prescription from their physician, insurance card and photo identification.
From start to finish, the mammogram exam takes about 30 minutes. The Radiology Department at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital also provides a free breast cancer risk-assessment with every screening mammogram at no additional charge. This calculated lifetime risk is included in every patient’s final mammogram report that is sent directly to the referring physician.
Gallagher arranged a partnership with the Mercy Vocational High School Cosmetology Program to offer the complimentary manicures. Up to ten cosmetology students in grades 11th and 12th will be on site to provide the service, which will count towards cosmetology hours that are required to obtain their certification to practice upon graduation.
“The students will benefit from this partnership in many ways, including being able to adapt to using their skills in a non-salon environment,” says Kathy Swift, a cosmetology instructor at Mercy Vocational High School. “And most of all, it shows them the importance of getting a mammogram.”
Mercy Philadelphia Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. The hospital offers walk-in screening mammograms every Thursday and Saturday in the Radiology Department, Ground Floor, 501 South 54th Street.
