Are You a Long-Time Smoker? A Lung Screening at Nazareth Hospital Could Save Your Life

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 28, 2015): Nazareth Hospital has launched a Lung Cancer Screening Program. Designed for long-time smokers, a chest CT scan allows our physicians to find signs of lung cancer early on, helping to improve treatment effectiveness and increase the rate of survival. The screenings are offered with one goal in mind: to save lives.

Annual low-dose CT screening for lung cancer is recommended for high-risk individuals, including the following:

  • Those 55 to 77 years old
  • Current smokers or those who have quit within the past 15 years
  • Have no signs or symptoms of lung disease
  • Have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack years (A pack year equals smoking 20 cigarettes every day for one year)

The risk for lung cancer increases with age and cumulative exposure to tobacco smoke. Smoking is the biggest risk factor, and the more and longer people smoke, the higher their risk.

A physician’s prescription is needed for a lung CT screening, so talk to your doctor about whether screening is right for you. And while screening may be the right option for some, the best way to prevent lung cancer is to stop smoking.

Screening includes consultation with our tobacco treatment specialist for patients who are current tobacco users or have quit within 30 days of their screening date. Our tobacco cessation counselor will provide education and offer cessation services.

Lung CT screenings are available at Nazareth Hospital, located at 2601 Holme Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19152. For appointments, please call 215.335.6400. To learn more, visit www.mercyhealth.org/healthylung.
