Mercy Philadelphia Hospital’s Juanita Ellis, RN Wins Daisy Award

Juanita Ellis, BSN, RN is the Daisy Award Winner for the first quarter of 2015 at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital.

West Philadelphia, PA (May 8, 2015): The senior management team and nursing colleagues at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital recently recognized the hospital’s DAISY Award recipient for the first quarter of 2015: Juanita Ellis, BSN, RN, clinical nurse supervisor of 4NW and 6NW. Ellis was nominated by her colleagues and a patient for her consistent, compassionate commitment to her patients and their families.

Said one nominator, “She is assuring to her patients that they are able to manage and coordinate their care after discharge and assists the primary nurse with collaborating discharge instructions, equipment, home care and community resources. She always exhibits a positive attitude at work and is always willing to pitch in and help out wherever she is needed. Her daily responsibilities are so varied, yet, she embraces her duties full-heartedly.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick “Pat” Barnes. The care Patrick received inspired the Barnes family to create the DAISY Awards to recognize nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.

“We are delighted to honor Juanita with the DAISY Award. Not only does she possess the clinical skills and compassionate care that are at the heart of the DAISY Award, but she also embodies the core values of Mercy in her work each and every day,” adds Mercy Philadelphia Hospital Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Services Dawn Grasso.

Patients, visitors, physicians, other nurses or team members can nominate a Mercy Philadelphia nurse for the DAISY award. One recipient is selected each quarter. Each honoree receives a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. The DAISY award winner’s unit coworkers celebrate with a treat of cinnamon rolls, in keeping with a tradition the Barnes family established.
