Mercy Philadelphia Hospital Kicks Off Year-Long Commemoration for 100th Anniversary with Community Event and Banner Unfurling

100th anniversaryWest Philadelphia, Pa. (June 29, 2017): Mercy Philadelphia Hospital kicked off celebrations for its 100th anniversary on June 28 with the unfurling of a 25-foot building banner and accompanying community program to celebrate the hospital’s rich history. Its official founding took place on July 2, 1918, known then as Misericordia Hospital. Two days later, the hospital accepted its first patient. From June 2017 through July 2, 2018—the actual 100-year date—the hospital will be hosting several events to commemorate 100 years of service in the community.

The program also featured Mary Jane McCormick, the granddaughter of a Mercy Philadelphia Hospital nurse who attended the hospital’s 1918 opening, hymns sung by Mercy Philadelphia Hospital’s Gospel Choir, a dedication for a "Year of Mercy in West Philadelphia," and a gathering of hands for an aerial photograph from the hospital’s roof. Following the program, community members and colleagues gathered for light refreshments in the hospital’s original courtyard.

“Mercy Philadelphia Hospital is fortunate to celebrate a century of community service,” said Mercy Philadelphia Hospital Executive Director Sue Cusack. “Healthcare has changed over the decades, but our commitment to the community we serve remains unwavering.”

For a century, Mercy Philadelphia Hospital has anchored a sycamore-shaded block of West Philadelphia. Within its walls, generations have been born, healed and accompanied in their final moments. The hospital’s enduring presence and service speak to the dedication to the community it serves. Today, Mercy Philadelphia Hospital is a 157-bed community teaching hospital with dozens of specialties and services, including cancer care, cardiology and surgical and digestive services.
