Nazareth Hospital Imaging Receives ACR Accreditation in PET/CT

PET MachinePhiladelphia, PA (May 10, 2017): The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded a three-year accreditation to Nazareth Hospital’s Imaging Department for Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET/CT).

“The Medical Imaging Department at Nazareth is pleased to have received another three-year accreditation from the ACR for our PET/CT program,” said Donald S. Ostrum, MD, Chair of Radiology. “PET/CT plays an integral role in diagnosing and staging cancers, and monitoring the treatment of our oncology patients in the Northeast Philadelphia community.”

For many cancers, early detection can give you a better chance at recovery. Positron Emission Tomography combined with Computed Tomography (PET/CT) is a non-invasive procedure that can help detect cancer and pinpoint exactly where it is. This helps doctors diagnose cancer, create an effective treatment plan, and check on treatment progress. PET/CT helps physicians learn precisely where tumors are, so they can make more informed decisions about biopsy, therapy and surgery; learn whether cancer has spread to other parts of the body; and see if treatment is destroying or slowing tumors.

Accreditation from the ACR—the principal organization of radiologists, radiation oncologists and clinical medical physicists in the United States—is granted when a facility has met all the testing criteria established by the ACR for clinical image quality and phantom image quality.

The ACR was established to serve patients and society by maximizing the value of radiology, radiation oncology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine and medical physics by advancing the science of radiology, improving the quality of patient care, positively influencing the socio-economics of the practice of radiology, providing continuing education for radiology and allied health professions and conducting research for the future of radiology.
