Parkinson’s Patients Learn to Walk BIG and Speak LOUD at Nazareth Hospital

To help men and women living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) manage the loss of clear speech and controlled movements, and difficulty swallowing, Nazareth Hospital Center for Physical Therapy, Rehab and Balance recently launched the LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® programs.

Through the LSVT LOUD® program, patients with PD work with a certified speech therapist to improve both voice and speech by addressing volume, breath support, pitch range and voice quality.

LSVT® BIG specifically addresses the movement issues experienced by people living with PD. The intensive training protocol helps patients improve core movements used in daily living. A certified physical/occupational therapist teaches patients how to avoid inactivity and keep their movements going during everyday activities. LSVT BIG® also helps PD patients walk faster with larger steps and improve balance.

“We are committed to offering those living with Parkinson’s Disease comprehensive services,” said Nancy Cherone, Executive Director of Nazareth Hospital. “The LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD programs will empower our patients and enable them to improve their quality of life.”

Both the LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® programs include:

  • 16 sessions: four consecutive days a week for four weeks
  • Individual one-hour sessions
  • Daily homework practice
  • Daily carryover exercises

Each year, approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and an estimated four percent of people with those living with PD are diagnosed before the age of 50.
