Chairman Department of Medicine
The Chair of the Department Of Medicine is a key member of the Medical Staff leadership team and is responsible for affairs in department of medicine at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and Mercy Philadelphia Hospital (MCMC). The Chairman of the Department of Medicine reports to the Chief Executive Officer of MCMC and ACMOs of both hospitals and works closely with other senior managers of both hospitals in the planning and day-to-day management of the Dept.
a) Assist in the community need assessment for a new service in Department of Medicine and recommend to the CEO for the recruitment of new medical staff in department of medicine
b) Take lead in recruiting medical staffs to provide adequate coverage for existing services in Department of medicine
c) Make recommendations to the system hospital regarding off site clinical services when necessary to provide patient care
d) Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services including competence and qualifications of department members.
e) Responsible for knowing and supervising physicians to remain in compliance with Joint Commission standards, Mercy’s Policies and Procedures, Applicable Laws, as well as regulations that apply to their performance, medical record documentation in compliance with Mercy requirements, third party payers requirements, appropriate diagnosis and codes
a) Assist the CEO to identify the service needs in the community and develop strategies to build that services based on the mission and vision of MCMC
b) Responsible for monitoring the growth of inpatient and outpatient services in department of medicine at both Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and Mercy Philadelphia Hospital.
c) Maintain an office practice and engage in the active clinical practice of respective specialty in internal Medicine
d) Assist the Chief Executive Officer of the system hospital in the preparation of annual reports and such budget planning pertaining to the department including recommendations for space and other resources needed by the department, as may be required by management of the Board of Directors.
a) Serve on system MCMC Medical Executive Committee.
b) Coordinate the integration of interdepartmental and intra-departmental services.
c) Integrate the department into the primary functions of the hospitals.
d) Enforce within the department hospital policies, Medical Staff bylaws, departmental rules and regulations, Ethical and Religious Directives.
e) Implement within the department, actions taken by the system Hospital, Medical Executive committee and/or Board of Directors.
f) Assist in the establishment of orientation and continuing education programs for all persons in the department.
g) Make a report to the credentials committee concerning the appointment and delineation of clinical privileges for all applicants seeking privileges within the department.
h) Be responsible for the evaluation of all provisional appointed department members and report thereon to the Credentials Committee.
i) Recommend criteria for clinical privileges within the department.
j) Assist the system hospitals, in accordance with the provisions of the bylaws, in the evaluation of requests for Locum tenums privileges within the department and with the evaluation of requests for Locum tenums privileges within the department and with the evaluation of requests for temporary privileges
k) Report and recommend to the Chief Executive Officer of the system hospital when necessary with respect to matters affecting patient care in the department, including personnel, supplies, special regulations, standing orders and techniques.
l) Represent the interests of the department and both hospitals.
m) Delegate to a director of the sub sections, if any, such duties as appropriate. Also, supervise the activity of sub-section chiefs/directors in the Dept of Medicine at MCMC.
n) that the faculty is compliant with the ACGME Surgical Review Committee regulations regarding supervision of Actively participate in the education of the MCMC surgical residents as well as medical students, and shall assure surgical resident by the surgical faculty and related regulations
a) Establish and maintain quality improvement programs in the relevant department, as necessary and participate Quality Council as scheduled.
b) Monitor, evaluate, and improve on an ongoing basis, the quality and appropriateness of patient care and services provided within the department.
c) Monitor the professional performance of all individuals who have delineated clinical reappointment process and at such other times as may be indicated, including but not limited to FPPE/OPPE
d) Meet all current and future requirements as mandated by Department health and the Joint Commission including but not limited to conduct regular departmental meetings and keep the minutes
e) Conduct regular meetings for performance evaluation of the dept.
f) Conduct peer reviews, root cause analysis, failure mode evaluations and M&M conferences to improve
a) Plan, direct, budget and implement all administrative clinical activities within the department, manage department staff and evaluate staff performance.
b) Responsible for departmental utilization management with participation in Utilization Management Committee and other initiatives as indicated by Chief Executive Officer or designee
c) Monitor the adherence of UM plan by the members of department of medicine
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
I. Education, Training and Experience:
-Completion of an approved MD or DO Medical Program/School
-Education, training and experience outside of medical training for patient care that would support the Chair of the Department of Medicine’s administrative role.
II. Other Requirements:
-If the candidate has been educated in a subspecialty area, Board Certification in this subspecialty is desirable.
-Should have substantial experience in teaching and administration of medical education programs at all levels, including medical students, residents and continuing medical education.
