Compassionate palliative care benefits patient and family
When faced with a life-limiting illness, quality palliative care can become a gift of comfort to both patients and their loved ones.
Through a partnership with VITAS Palliative Care Solutions, the Mercy Home Health Palliative Care program offers pain and symptom management that can improve the quality of life for patients with serious or progressive illness.
The key to the program’s success is a holistic approach, says Elizabeth Cox, RN, BS, clinical manager at Mercy Home Health and palliative care coordinator. “Holistic care means treating the whole patient, including physical, spiritual and emotional needs,” she explains.
Palliative care begins with a referral from the patient’s physician and embraces those still receiving life-prolonging or curative therapies for life-limiting diseases, such as advanced cancer and cardiac, respiratory or renal disease. Mercy Home Health’s palliative care program involves a team of highly experienced nurses and social workers who work closely with the patient’s family to oversee the patient’s quality of life.
Palliative care is appropriate for patients of any age and at any stage of serious illness, Cox stresses. “Through palliative care, we are able to manage pain, provide spiritual counseling and develop care goals. With the support of our social work team, we help the patient and family make decisions about the patient’s future and make any adjustments in care that are needed along the way. We are always striving to make sure that the patient’s current and future care goals are honored.”
