Customized orthopedic rehabilitation

When you are recovering from an orthopedic injury or surgery such as knee replacement, the future can seem uncertain.

KneeThat’s why Mercy Fitzgerald is fully focused on returning you to the highest level of independence and mobility possible. Our customized rehabilitative care is overseen by board-certified orthopedic physicians and staffed by caring, qualified physical therapists and specialists.

In the Hospital

Mercy Fitzgerald’s 20-bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit treats patients with major joint replacement, hip fracture and spinal cord injury. Patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy each day, five or more days a week.

“Our mission is to provide condition-specific and patient-centered care,” says Pasquale Colavita, DO, director of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. “The acute rehab program is overseen by board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists called physiatrists. We work closely with the physician, patient and family, and patients often mention the personal relationships that develop while they’re here,” says Dr. Colavita. “These connections help inspire them to make positive lifestyle changes.”

Outpatient Therapy

“The outpatient rehabilitation and therapy team at Mercy Fitzgerald includes specialized therapists who are trained to handle a variety of orthopedic conditions,” says Ann Driscoll, PT, NCS, a neurological clinical specialist. And a hearing and balance component tackles a common problem for many rehab patients post-surgery—reducing the risk of potentially devastating falls that can lead to hip fractures. The hearing and balance program is one of the few in the area with BalanceMaster™ equipment, which allows the patient to regain steadiness and view their progress in real time.

“We also pride ourselves on the amount of one-on-one care we provide,” says Ann. “We make sure we have time to develop a relationship that ensures each patient’s full recovery.”
