Diagnosing joint and bone problems

Early diagnosis keeps bone and joint problems in check

kneeMore than one in four Americans has a musculoskeletal condition needing medical attention.* If left untreated, these bone and joint problems can lead to chronic pain, lower quality of life and even permanent disability. That’s why at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, highly trained orthopedic specialists are available around the clock to diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain or bodily injuries.

“Early diagnosis is key,” says David Mayer, MD, chair of radiology at Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Philadelphia Hospitals. “When we spot a problem early, our orthopedic surgeons may be able to use less aggressive treatments such as physical therapy or a minor surgical procedure. If a condition progresses without proper treatment, it can require more extensive intervention.”

Leading-Edge technology

“Patients under our care have access to the best equipment and radiologists who are specially trained in spinal and musculoskeletal diagnosis,” says Dr. Mayer. “We provide each patient with compassionate and comprehensive care every step of the way.”

Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital is equipped with some of the most advanced diagnostic technology available. In the Diagnostic Radiology department, a highly skilled team of board-certified and fellowship-trained radiologists and technologists uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiography (X-ray), computed tomography (CT), bone densitometry and ultrasound technology to help accurately diagnose their patients’ orthopedic conditions. The Diagnostic Radiology team also uses state-of-the-art nuclear medicine and PET/CT scanning to identify tumors, infections and inflammatory conditions.
