Expert orthopedic program

Advanced care plus staff expertise equals strong orthopedic program

From joint replacements to emergency reconstructive surgery, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital offers high-quality, advanced care for most bone- and joint-related injuries and illnesses, including:

  • Minimally invasive outpatient arthroscopy for a variety of conditions, including major joint repair and shoulder rotator cuff reconstruction
  • Elective surgery for major joint replacement, including shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles
  • 24-hour emergency reconstructive surgery for repair of damaged tissue
  • Advanced diagnostic equipment
  • Specialized physical therapy for orthopedic conditions and rehabilitation after surgery or injury
  • Sports medicine

The highly qualified staff is always available. “A board-certified orthopedic surgeon is here for patients 24 hours a day, every day,” says Joseph Shatouhy, MD, chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Mercy Fitzgerald. “Dr. Thomas Duffy and I cover the hospital around the clock, caring for any patients who require emergency surgery.” And specially trained orthopedic nurses and certified physical therapists provide personalized care in a setting that’s close to home and family.

Mercy Fitzgerald also offers the latest in customized joint replacement technology. “We offer gender-specific knee replacements that account for the differences between the male and female anatomy,” explains Dr. Shatouhy. “We also perform high-flexion knee replacements, which allow deeper flexion than is normally required on a daily basis for those with specialized needs, such as participation in sports.”
