Make a move to stay cool

Staying active is good year-round medicine. But it can be risky to exercise when the summer sun heats up. That’s particularly true if you have a medical condition, like heart disease, or you take certain medications.

Woman sitting against tree“You’re more likely to come down with a heat-related illness if you’re not careful, and those can be really dangerous,” says Catherine Khayati, Mercy LIFE Social Work Manager.

To keep moving safely this summer:

Rise and shine. Get your daily walk or other form of exercise in during the early morning before the day gets too warm and the sidewalks and streets heat up.

Seek shade. When outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible while you exercise.

Dress for the heat. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, sunglasses, and a hat.

Stay inside. If the day is just too hot, try to do your exercise indoors, preferably in an air-conditioned space. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, don’t forget you can always come to a Mercy LIFE Adult Day Center to cool off.

“During hot weather—or anytime—visit one of our Mercy LIFE Adult Day Centers,” Catherine says. “The centers are air-conditioned and offer exercise classes, as well as many other activities.”
