Minimally invasive aneurysm treatment in Philadelphia

Mercy Philadelphia Hospital’s Vascular Center help diagnose brain aneurysms quickly.

Physicians at Mercy Philadelphia Hospital’s vascular center can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, with a strong focus on stroke and brain aneurysm treatment. Most treatments at the vascular center are image-guided and minimally invasive, says Director of Interventional Radiology Salmi Simmons, MD. That means procedures are done quickly, and with a short recovery time.

“For example, let’s say we have a patient with a suspected brain aneurysm, which can often be very small and difficult to detect. At the vascular center, we would perform an arteriogram, where we inject a harmless dye into the blood vessels that feed the brain,” explains Dr. Simmons.

That dye allows doctors to clearly see and take X-ray images of the brain’s blood vessels. “We can do 3-D images from there, and get a detailed picture to identify exactly where the aneurysm is,” says Dr. Simmons. “From there, we can give the neurosurgeons all the information they need to treat it.”

Time is of the essence when treating stroke patients, and that’s why Mercy Philadelphia has interventional radiologists available 24/7. “We are equipped to receive the patient and begin diagnostic work immediately,” she says. “We are a 24-hour service and can do these procedures very quickly.”

In addition to diagnostic services, the Radiology Department offers advanced neuroimaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), CT angiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The center also offers many kinds of non-vascular care, including treatment of peripheral vascular disease, and treatment of uterine fibroids with a one-day, minimally invasive procedure, thus preventing patients from undergoing a hysterectomy.
