Cancer Support and Survivorship Groups

The Mercy Cancer Care team understands that your emotional well-being is vital to your physical recovery. We know that sharing concerns, knowledge and experiences with others who have had similar experiences can help patients feel that they are not alone.

We offer special classes and programs to improve the overall quality of life for people currently in treatment and to support cancer survivors and their families during the diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

General Cancer Support Groups

At Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Delaware County:

  • Meets the first Wednesday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Cancer Resource Room.

At Mercy Philadelphia Hospital in West Philadelphia:

  • Meets the fourth Thursday of the month (except holidays) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in McAuley Conference Room. For more information, call 215.879.7733.

At Nazareth Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia:

  • Meets the third Tuesday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Seventh Floor Rehab Conference Room. For more information, call 215.335.6324.

Specialized Cancer Support Groups and Programs

At Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital:

  • The Men’s Cancer Support Group meets the third Wednesday of the month from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Cancer Center Resource Room (Ground Floor). For more information, call 610.237.2648.
  • The Women’s Cancer Support Group meets the first Wednesday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Cancer Center Resource Room (Ground Floor). For more information, call 610.237.2648.

Look Good, Feel Better

This free program, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, patients with cancer and survivors meet with a trained and registered cosmologist to learn beauty techniques to help combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. 

The cosmetologist provides helpful information on how you can cope with skin changes and hair loss due to chemotherapy or radiation by using cosmetics and skin care products. Free cosmetic kits are provided, and are available in light, medium, dark and very dark shades to enhance all complexion types.

At Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Delaware County:

  • Meets the third Wednesday of every other “even-numbered” month from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Cancer Resource Room.

Oncology Rehabilitation

We understand that cancer treatment can be tough on your body and spirit. Side effects of treatment can lead to fatigue, discomfort, weakness and pain that can prevent you from leading your life as you once did. The good news is, rehabilitation can help you become whole again and return to everyday living as quickly and as safely as possible.

Mercy Cancer Care is pleased to offer outpatient physical and occupational therapy services specifically designed to address:

  • Cancer-related fatigue
  • Swelling in the arms
  • Energy conservation
  • Loss of motion
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Difficulty walking
  • Risk of falling
  • Burning or tingling in hands and feet

Oncology rehabilitation is available at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Mercy Philadelphia Hospital, and Nazareth Hospital.

Yoga for Cancer

Yoga is a powerful tool on the pathway of recovery for individuals with cancer. This holistic mind/body practice allows patients and survivors to take an active role in their recovery. The Mercy Cancer Care team is excited to offer special yoga classes that will help you to manage the side effects of cancer treatment.

Certified yoga instructors, who are trained in yoga for cancer, will guide you through gentle poses and breathing techniques that will detoxify the body, increase lymphatic flow and strengthen the immune system.

Additional benefits of yoga during and after cancer treatments include:

  • Relieve strength
  • Restore motion and flexibility
  • Boost immune system
  • Manage pain, fear and anxiety
  • Enhance empowerment and well being
