Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder that affects the colon. IBS does not cause structural abnormality to the bowel, but instead prevents the bowel from working properly, causing severe cramping and abdominal pain to the patient.

Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Include:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Mucus in stool

Diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

  • Blood test for Celiac Disease
  • Colonoscopy
  • Complete blood count
  • Diagnosis of IBS is done through testing which can include:
  • Medical history and physical examination
  • Stool analysis
  • Thyroid function test

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment Options:

IBS can be treated in various was which can include: altering your diet temporarily or permanently or through prescribed medications. Surgery is not an option for IBS.
