HealtGrades Top 100 Best for Stroke Care

Mercy Health System hospitals have earned numerous awards and recognitions for outstanding stroke care. All four hospitals - Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, Mercy Philadelphia Hospital, Mercy Suburban Hospital and Nazareth Hospital - have been designated as Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission.

Other notable achievements include:

    • Named one of America's Top 100 Hospitals for Stroke Care by HealthGrades (Nazareth Hospital).
    • Four-time recipient of HealthGrades' Stroke Care Excellence Award, ranking the hospital among the top 5% nationally (Nazareth Hospital - 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012).
    • Continued national certification by the Commission on Accredidation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) (Nazareth Hospital and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital).
    • The first community hospital-based program in Philadelphia to receive the Gold Seal of Approval and national certification (renewed for two years in 2012) from The Joint Commission (Nazareth Hospital).

Stroke Warning Signs

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  • Sudden nausea, fever, vomiting, or having brief fainting spells.

Receiving treatment within the first few hours can greatly reduce the risk of permanent damage or even death.
