Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Philadelphia Hospitals Rank Among the Best in Philadelphia

Darby, PA (June 9, 2011) - Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Philadelphia Hospitals have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Best Hospital in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area.

The U.S. News & World Report has ranked the hospitals, jointly as Mercy Catholic Medical Center, among the best in the region, as well as honored them for high-performance in the specialty areas of diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; and neurology and neurosurgery.

"We are pleased to be recognized for our excellence in clinical outcomes and patient safety. This is a testimony to our staff's commitment to building healthier communities," says Kathryn Conallen, Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy Philadelphia Hospitals. "The ranking as a Best Hospital in the Philadelphia Metro area is evidence of our ongoing commitment to be a leading provider of high-quality healthcare."

U.S. News & World Report created Best Hospitals more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, such as brain tumors typically considered inoperable and delicate pancreatic procedures. In more recent years, rankings are based on data such as procedure volume, mortality rates, and the patient safety index (PSI) are evaluated, as well as reputation, nurse/patient ratios, technology, quality of care, and so on.

"This recent achievement as Best Hospital is a result of our teams' focus on clinical excellence," says Mathew Mathew, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer at Mercy Philadelphia. "At Mercy, we pride ourselves on the quality of care that we deliver to our patients every day."

Adds Sharon Carney, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer at Mercy Fitzgerald, "It's exciting to build a momentum where that high quality of care is consistently recognized--not only by our patients, their families and our communities, but also by reputable organizations such as U.S. News & World Report."

The U.S. News & World Report ranking expands on the number of recent prestigious national recognitions for the Mercy hospitals, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery's Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation for Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious ENERGY STAR award for Mercy Philadelphia Hospital.
