Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Debuts New Women’s Imaging Suite

Darby, PA (June 3, 2013): Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital (MFH) opened a new Women’s Imaging Suite for patient care today in the Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center on Lansdowne Ave. The 1,100-square-foot renovated suite features two state-of-the-art digital mammography machines, a new stereotactic breast biopsy table, a DEXA scanner for osteoporosis screenings, ultrasound services, a private changing area and comfortable patient waiting room.

“Mercy Fitzgerald has a rich legacy of serving the many healthcare needs of women in our community,” says MFH Executive Director Karen Javie. “The new Women’s Imaging Suite is the latest milestone in continuing to provide high-quality and accessible care for them. We are excited to offer a beautiful space, where they can receive radiology services that are essential to screening and diagnosing diseases that are prevalent in women, like breast cancer.”

A mammogram is often used to screen for breast cancer in women who have no symptoms. MFH invested in a second digital mammography unit equipped with computer-aided detection (CAD) to further improve finding abnormalities. The new unit acquires higher resolution images with low dose technology with a relative decrease in radiation dose of approximately 25-30 percent as compared to other digital mammography units.

“High-quality imaging is very important because it allows us to identify cancer when it is smaller and at an earlier stage,” says Director of Breast Imaging Caroline Ho, MD, one of two fellowship-trained breast imagers at Mercy. “Breast cancer can be more treatable when it’s caught early.”

Dr. Ho adds that the second digital mammography unit allows for faster patient throughput, meaning more available appointments, shorter exam and wait times, and same-day test results for diagnostic mammograms.
“We also now have the ability to perform stereotactic biopsies in the same location, which will be very convenient for our patients,” says Dr. Ho.

Designed for maximum patient comfort, the stereotactic biopsy table uses digital images to guide minimally invasive needle biopsies (removal of small tissue) of abnormalities of the breast.

The Mercy Fitzgerald Women’s Imaging Suite is accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the Federal Drug Administration.

MFH offers same-day, next day, evening, and Saturday appointments in the Women’s Imaging Suite. To schedule an appointment, call 610.237.2525.
