Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Expands Walk-In Screening Mammogram Services with Addition of Wednesday Hours

Darby, PA (August 13, 2014): Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital (MFH) is making it even more convenient for women to get their annual mammogram – by now offering Walk-In Screening Mammograms on an additional day: every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., beginning Wednesday, August 20. The new day and hours are in addition to the Walk-In Screening Mammogram Hours already offered every Thursday, also from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

“Mammograms are a women’s best tool when it comes to the fight against breast cancer,” says Radiologist and Women’s Imaging Specialist Caroline Ho, MD. “We’re proud to be able to expand our successful Walk-In Screening Mammogram service to two days in order to make it easier for more women to get screened.”

Women, 35 years and older who are due for their annual mammogram, can stop by without an appointment. Women will need to bring a signed physician script, insurance card and photo ID when they walk-in.

Current guidelines from the American Cancer Society recommend that women begin yearly mammograms at age 40 even if they have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer.

During a screening mammogram, two x-ray pictures are taken of each breast from different angles. One breast is compressed between two plates to flatten and spread the tissue apart. This allows for a good picture of the breast. Compression of the breast may cause temporary discomfort, but it should not hurt, and only lasts for a few seconds for each image of the breast. The x-ray image is taken and stored digitally in the computer. The test itself takes less than 10 minutes and results are available within 24 hours.

But that’s not all. The Radiology Department at MFH also provides a free breast cancer risk-assessment with every screening at no additional charge. This calculated lifetime risk is included in every patient’s final mammogram report that is sent directly to the referring physician.

Women with a history of breast cancer, breast surgery and breast implants are not eligible for the walk-in screening mammogram. Women preferring to schedule an appointment may do so by calling 610.237.2525.
