Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Welcomes the Holiday Season with Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Live Nativity
Darby, PA (December 5, 2014): On Thursday, December 4, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital (MFH), colleagues and members of the community officially welcomed the start of the Christmas season with MFH’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Live Nativity.
The hospital’s Great American Holly tree set the backdrop for the jovial occasion as a live nativity scene, portrayed by children and MFH colleagues took center stage. Attendees enjoyed listening and singing along to their favorite Christmas songs performed by Darren Lucis and Joanne Farrell of the musical group Sway.
MFH Executive Director Susan Cusack opened the program with welcoming remarks, thanking community members for their constant support and sharing a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas:
“As I look out amongst the crowd, it brings me tremendous joy to see so many of you here with us tonight. As you know, this year has been a rollercoaster for us at Mercy Fitzgerald. It’s been a year of tremendous accomplishments, but also a year with moments that left us vulnerable. But it is you – our neighbors – and your unwavering support that gets us through our times of need. Those moments exemplify the truest sense of community – and it is the very same that I see tonight.”
She continued, “As we come together, this time to light the Great American Holly that stands before us, let us also light our spirits with the peace, hope and joy that this time brings. And as we prepare for a time of shopping, gifting and feasting, let us also remember the story of Jesus’ life, of what really makes this time of year so special and what brings us together with the ones we love.”
MFH Vice President of Mission Integration Sister Donna Watto, RSM performed a reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah, before beginning the countdown to the lighting of the tree.
The official lighting commenced with the help of Mercy EMS and members of the Yeadon Borough Fire Company.
The evening’s festivities concluded with wishes of a happy and blessed Christmas by Mercy Health System Interim President and CEO Susan Croushore, and the anticipated arrival of Santa Claus, who later posed with children as they sat on his lap and shared their Christmas wishes. Attendees were then invited to enjoy a delicious spread of cookies, pastries, pretzels, hot chocolate and hot apple cider. Each attendee was gifted with a special tree ornament to decorate their own tree with.
