Mercy LIFE Celebrates Grand Opening of Valley View at Elwyn
First-Ever Residential LIFE Program for Deaf Seniors
Philadelphia, PA (May 21, 2014) – As part of its 2014 expansion into all of Delaware County, Mercy LIFE celebrated the grand opening of the first-ever residential facility and Mercy LIFE Adult Day Center for Deaf seniors on Wednesday, May 21.
Mercy LIFE is a nationally recognized Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and the new facility, named Valley View, located on the historic Elwyn campus in Elwyn, Delaware County, expands access to quality healthcare and adult day program services to residents. This center, which was retrofitted to provide dual services—housing and the Mercy LIFE program—is the first PACE program in the United States to provide services to a community specifically comprised of Deaf seniors.
“While we have served seniors throughout Delaware County since January 2014, Valley View at Elwyn marks our first physical site in the area,” said Carol Quinn, MSN, BSN, RN, Mercy LIFE and Mercy Home Health CEO.“By implementing Mercy LIFE’s robust clinical and social services at Valley View, we are able to ensure that these seniors remain as independent as possible, have access to round-the-clock healthcare management, and have the best overall quality of life.”
Transitioning and retrofitting the residential facility to become a Mercy LIFE Adult Day Center has been a tedious process over a year in the making, spearheaded by Molly Crumley, Director of Operations at Mercy LIFE Valley View and the Mercy LIFE Grays Ferry site in South Philadelphia. Additionally, Mercy LIFE hired all legacy Elwyn employees working at the residential site to maintain familiarity and comfort for the residents. Both the residents and staff are Deaf and communicate via American Sign Language (ASL).
“It’s been exciting to integrate our Mercy LIFE staff with the Elwyn staff, and we’ve spent several months learning best practices to serve Deaf participants,” Crumley said. “Celebrating our grand opening with such an energized and engaged team is invigorating, and we’re delighted to provide residential services in addition to the Mercy LIFE day program— another channel through which our staff can provide compassionate and patient-centered care to a previously underserved community, Deaf seniors.”
