Mercy Health System Earns Three 2019 HAP Achievement Awards

Mercy Health System earned three achievement awards from The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its outstanding efforts to improve healthcare in the state through innovation and excellence in community health projects, quality improvement efforts and operational efficiencies. The awards are:

  • Community Champions Award: Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital's program, “Opiate Reduction Efforts Across the Continuum, A Community Hospital's Approach,” maximized pain-management strategies and helped remove the stigma associated with the treatment of substance-use disorders.
  • Excellence in Care Award: Mercy Home Health's initiative, “Managing CHF from the Home: IV Diuretic Program Improves Disease Management and Reduces Hospital Readmissions,” expanded vulnerable patients’ access to much-needed and life-saving diuretic treatment.
  • In Safe Hands Award: Mercy Catholic Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy's “Pharmacist-Driven Vancomycin Monitoring Initiative," took steps to ensure patient safety in medication administration.

All three of these award-winning programs highlight Mercy’s pledge to maintaining safe, high-quality care in the communities it serves, with special attention to those who are underprivileged and underserved.

“At Mercy, we take a patient-centered approach to healthcare, and we're always looking for ways to serve our communities in innovative ways,” said Susan Cusack, President of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and Mercy Philadelphia Hospital. “Our HAP-award winning initiatives showcase how Mercy is leading the way in providing high-quality and compassionate care to our patients — all while advocating for health equity across our urban populations.”

HAP honored programs that illustrate Mercy’s commitment to individualized healthcare plans that ensure patients are provided the best tools and care on their paths to improved health, both in the hospital and in the home-care setting.

“We believe that some of the best kinds of healing can happen at home,” said Ruth Martynowicz, Vice President of Operations at Mercy Home Health. “At Mercy Home Health, our team of clinical experts work together to create a healing environment at home so that patients can achieve the highest possible level of independence.”

HAP selected 14 winners from 127 total award submissions for this year’s Delivering a Healthy Pennsylvania Achievement Awards. Entries were evaluated by a 16-judge panel. The panelists, drawn from Pennsylvania and across the nation, represented the public and private sectors, business organizations, consumer groups and renowned health care quality institutes. The HAP Achievement Awards have been an industry benchmark of outstanding patient care since 1978.
