Mercy Fitzgerald and Mercy LIFE Honored Veterans During Wreath-laying Ceremony
Darby, Pa. (May 28, 2019): On May 28, Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and Mercy LIFE held a Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony honoring fallen men and women of America’s Armed Forces. As part of Mercy’s ongoing Military and Veterans Health Program, the event provided the opportunity for military personnel in the community to connect with their local healthcare professionals.
Dozens of local veterans, colleagues and community members gathered for a short prayer service, wreath laying and presentations about the importance of Memorial Day. The event also featured participation from James Birkhead, head of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce’s Veterans Committee and remarks from David Morales, Veteran Liaison for VITAS Healthcare, and U.S. Army veteran Theodore Katz, MD, Medical Director of the Central Appeals Unit for Mercy Health System.
“We are proud to honor those who lost their lives while protecting our freedom,” said Dr. Katz. “Commitment to the military community is very important to our team. We want to ensure all military service members, veterans and their families in our community have access to high-quality and culturally sensitive healthcare.”
Through Mercy’s Military and Veterans Health Program — led by Dr. Katz and Jacquelyn Petrosky, Recreation Therapy Supervisor for Mercy LIFE— hospital colleagues are trained to recognize and respond to challenges specific to the military community, while providing respectful and culturally competent healthcare services. During the event, veterans and military personnel were treated to a free lunch at the hospital and offered free information about available healthcare services and other veteran-focused resources in the community.
