Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and about half of all Americans have at least one major risk factor. Risk factors commonly include family history, high total cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, advanced age, physical inactivity and obesity. In addition, patients may experience symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, or a tightness in the arm or jaw. People who experience symptoms of a heart attack should call 9-1-1 and be checked out immediately in the emergency room. If these patients initially classified as low-risk for a heart attack, they also may be referred to a next-day cardiology appointment for further evaluation.
For best results, heart disease prevention should begin early — before symptoms even become noticeable. Primary care physicians may refer patients over age 50 or with multiple risk factors for a cardiology consultation. The same-day/next-day program allows patients the opportunity to work closely with a cardiologist to assess potential risks and develop a plan to reduce those risks. Referred patients will receive a comprehensive evaluation of their cardiac status, as well as timely access to diagnostic testing and advanced imaging as needed, including stress tests, echocardiography, CT and angiography.
People who are concerned about their heart health and who do not have a cardiologist also are invited to call for a same-day/next-day appointment with Mercy Cardiology.
