Don’t be sidelined with a sports injury
Exercising is a fine fitness move.
But it’s easy to get hurt if you don’t take a few precautions.
Follow these suggestions from the new Mercy sports medicine specialist to reduce your risk of a painful injury:
Exercise throughout the week, if possible. Many weekend warriors are plagued by overuse injuries because they cram a week’s worth of exercise into two days.
“You develop injuries by ramping up activity too quickly,” says Michael Yang, MD. Taking a day off in between activities makes you less injury-prone.
Pay attention to your shoes. Choose the right shoes for the activity, advises Dr. Yang. Make sure they fit well, and replace them as they start to wear out—from three months to about a year, depending on your activity level.
“Old shoes can injure your foot or your knees, and your body gets a little misaligned,” Dr. Yang says.
Cool down. Science has built a better case for stretching after exercise than for stretching before a workout, advises Dr. Yang. “You won’t be as sore if you stretch after you work out,” he says.
