Poetry classes: Another way to help relieve stress

Our seniors are discovering their inner poet

They’re sharing a lifetime of stories in rhymes and free verse, and many are writing their very first poems.

Pencil on paperBut they’re not just trying something new. “They’re expressing feelings they may have bottled up,” says Chanel Coleman, CTRS, Recreation Therapy Manager at the day center. “That can be a real stress buster. One senior told me: ‘I have stories to tell. This helps me put my thoughts and feelings on paper’.”

Easing stress is especially important for seniors facing health problems or coping with loss. The class has another big benefit: It helps participants form friendships. You might call it poetry bonding.
