Mercy Health Systems philosophy of care is deeply rooted in a Catholic healthcare ministry that is committed to serving the poor and those most in need. We recognized the need to provide health services to the growing population of frail elders in South Philadelphia and started the first Mercy LIFE center on Columbus Boulevard.
In 1998, the doors opened with just seven participants, a few staff members, and one vehicle to provide transportation. With the need still great in South Philadelphia, we opened the second center on Moore Street in 2005. Our program was quickly established as a community asset that saved lives and motivated seniors to remain active and improve their quality of life. Based on the countless lives positively impacted in South Philadelphia, another center was opened in North Philadelphia, located on Hancock Street, to offer services to even more seniors who could benefit from the program.
Over the last 10 years the small staff has grown to more than 150 with over 600 seniors and their families served. We currently have over 380 active participants that receive quality care that allows them to remain independent in their own homes and communities. In fall of 2010, we opened the latest site on Broad Street in South Philadelphia.
