What are neuropathies?
Neuropathies are more commonly known as peripheral nerve disorders. Your peripheral nerves are the ones outside your brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nerve disorders distort the messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
There are over 100 kinds of peripheral nerve disorders. They can affect one nerve or many. Some are the result of other diseases, like diabetes. Others happen after a virus infection. Still others are from nerve compression. Symptoms often start gradually, and then get worse. They include:
- Burning or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Sensitivity to touch
How are neuropathies treated?
Therapy aims to treat the underlying disease and use the right medications to improve the symptoms. An experienced neurologist can help patients feel more comfortable, and have a much better quality of life. It’s very important to get to a skilled neurologist as soon as you notice the symptoms—before the disease has a chance to cause too much permanent damage.
